Motivation & Personal Development

Description: This training course recognises the importance of motivation to personal development within an organisation by teaching participants the core components that underlie a positive approach to work life. Our goal in this course is to instil participants with a greater awareness of the motivational forces that drive the individual, so they can develop a more productive approach to their working lives and enhance their overall levels of motivation to become happier and more efficient employees.

Key areas addressed include:

  • The role and function of our emotional attitudes in work
  • The means of critically assessing how we interact and communicate with colleagues
  • The way in which techniques, such as
    • Conceptual Analysis
    • Critical Thinking
    • Emotional Analysis

can be used to better understand the driving forces behind many of our decisions and actions in the work place

  • This is the fifth in the Professional Training “96% Programme”, aimed at practically confronting the issues facing us in the workplace.
  • If we use only 1% more of the 96% of our brainpower we aren’t utilising, we’ll be 25% more effective. This session is another step on that route.

Trainer Biography: Dr. Kevin M. Sludds:

Dr. Sludds has devised and delivered highly regarded courses in areas including; `emotional analysis and self development`, `the philosophy of mind` and `creative writing`. He has published and lectured both in Ireland and internationally. He has worked with a range of clients in both the public and private sectors and has contributed to the development of Government strategy in the area of mental health.

Course Outline:

Introduction:

  • Outline of the day ahead and a Get-to-know-you session.

What is Motivation?:

  • Defining the theme; Recognising potential problems & providing concrete examples; Feed-back from all of the participants

Why do we lack Motivation?:

  • A discussion of the symptoms of a lack of motivation, e.g. negative thoughts about prospects/abilities/Self; Restricted choices and limited goals; Feeling discontent or being stuck in a rut etc.
  • Getting to grips with the emotional attitudes that underline a lack of motivation, e.g. unhappiness.
  • Describing the Hybrid Cognitive Theory of Emotion

Techniques to Building Motivation:

  • Description and discussion of the technique of Conceptual Analysis and how it helps us to uncover unrecognised biases and presuppositions
  • Challenges: moving out of our comfort zone
  • Focusing: highlighting specific positive actions that can be acted on to develop greater motivation amongst a group

Motivational Analysis:

  • Fear as a Motivating Force – are negative emotions a good long-term source of motivation?
  • Self-belief and Positive Goals as Motivating Forces
  • Utopian Experiment: Life Design Plan - identifying attainable from unattainable goals

Motivational Exercises:

  • What gives you pleasure/makes you happy in work (e.g. doing a good job and being recognised for it)?
  • What obstacles exist to higher levels of motivation in your work place?
  • List those people who you believe have achieved and how they did it
  • How does open and positive forms of communication lead to enhanced motivation in a group?
  • Creating clear goals and gaining a positive attitude
